Treatment of bruxism and temporomandibular joints

Bruxism is the unconscious grinding and clenching of teeth, which over time destroys the teeth. Bruxism treatment is carried out in several stages. First, we perform highly specialized diagnostics by a specialist with many years of experience, i.e.:

  • digital bite analysis,
  • X-rays of teeth and temporomandibular joints,
  • examination of the masticatory muscles and temporomandibular joints.

It is also very important to collect a detailed interview from the patient. Accurate diagnostics allows you to detect the cause of various ailments and symptoms. In the final stage, we implement the most effective individual method of functional treatment using a relaxation splint and physiotherapy. Untreated bruxism may contribute to changes in the temporomandibular joints.

Symptoms visible in the patient’s mouth accompanying joint and muscle dysfunction include:

  • vertical enamel crack,
  • worn teeth toothache,
  • secondary caries,
  • wedge defects (cervical),
  • pathological tooth wear,
  • cracking of ceramic restorations and removable dentures,
  • rapid loss of tightness of composite fillings.

The most common joint symptoms include:

  • non-physiological joint sounds (clicking, popping joints)
  • pain in the muscles of the masticatory system,
  • headaches, eye pain
  • occiput pain
  • pain and limited mobility of the cervical spine.
  • jaw dislocation,
  • deviation from the axis of movement when opening and closing the mouth.

Problems with the temporomandibular joints may be related not only to malocclusions and missing teeth, but also to many pathological changes, such as: developmental changes, intra-articular diseases (arthrosis, rheumatoid inflammation, gout), functional loads (inflammatory conditions). , micro-injuries, traumatic damage, overload changes), or with surgical, dental or otolaryngological interventions.

Spinal disorders, postural tension changes, lack of muscle stabilization and posture defects may also cause problems with the above-mentioned joints. All ailments and conditions related to the temporomandibular joint can be treated.
